Districts 6-8 in 1A are up. May start the 2A-Region 1 preview as time allows. That should be going out tonight.
I posted something to my Facebook page this morning — you should follow it if you’re not — just grinds my gears a bit. Up north, the teams I used to cover are going through team dual regionals this week with team state this weekend (individual state was last weekend in Illinois and Iowa — Iowa holds their duals before individual state).
At any rate, TV stations went and shot video of the duals. One school was 90 minutes away from the TV station; I know because I’ve just about driven the length and breadth of it. Yet, the station drove out, shot video, put it on air and had a rundown on it.
I know the sports guys on TV up there. Trust me, that’s not a one-time deal. They go shoot dual meets EVERY WEEK.
It CAN be done here. The TV stations here CHOOSE not to do it They want to be cute and put Twitter photos of drunk Daytona fans and do the hashtag “Team Sideline” thing and call it a sports broadcast.
Silly. And demeaning, because Drunk Daytona Fan got more love on one of the local channels than did Camden’s wrestling team, which only won FIVE individual state titles at the GHSA state meet.
This is what has to change. We’ve made some inroads in print, though by no means near as many as we would like. The last time I saw a TV station cover any local wrestling — outside of a feature or showcase piece, I’m talking about LIVE, in-season wrestling — was Uncivil War 2014.
We aren’t going to rest or think “Mission Accomplished” until the kids who work hard 24/7/365 to build something bigger than themselves, right here in Florida, get the same love that their brethren in Illinois and Iowa get as a matter of common practice.
