We started this thing on a wing and a prayer four seasons ago, when this year’s senior class was full of young and squirrelly freshmen. They’re now a little older and a little…less…squirrelly.
We started at a 3A district meet at Mandarin and a 1A region meet at Bolles and we left those tournaments knowing that a site simply had to be built.
And so, we built it up from nothing. We have invested hundreds of hours of sleepless evenings, sleepless late nights (like last night), thousands of miles on the car/cars, and countless hours watching kids make a little something more of themselves through the hardest high school sport there is.
We’ve maxed it out as a one-person operation. It couldn’t grow any bigger or be any more comprehensive, or even just BETTER, on my effort alone. To take it in the directions it needs to go, we need your help. We’re not talking about cash donations, although they’re always greatly appreciated.
No, this time all we need you to do is eat pizza. On a Saturday night.
We ask so very much of you, do we not?
Come to Your Pie, in Fleming Island, on Saturday, March 19, from 6:30-10 p.m. 10% of the proceeds from your order will be invested in the site — I will have people working with me to do that, and we’re going to invest those funds so as to bring about immediate improvements in the look, in the capability, and the professionalism of the site that will give it some gloss to go with all of the energy I’ve brought to the table.
We have a parents’ group and coaches’ group started to help walk through some of these things as we take this site to the next level. If you want to join up with those folks, I’m sure there’ll be representatives of both in place (I know there will be on the parents’ side)
“But Matman,” I hear you say. “It’s NCAA finals night. We were gonna watch it on TV.”
Yep, and so you shall. You can watch me yell at my beloved Hawkeyes — and no, I will not be wearing a mullet wig in honor of my boy Sammy Brooks, my girlfriend would have TWO cows, and she’s from Iowa too, so she knows from cows and guys with mullets — have a beverage or two of your choosing, talk wrestling with me and your new friends.
Let’s show the larger Jacksonville world that this site is worth its time, as it has been worth yours. Worth mine. Worth the kids’ time.
Show up. Eat pizza. Make the site better. PACK THE PLACE ALL NIGHT.
