Coaching Changes

We have a good one leaving us and a good one coming back.

Certainly not to my surprise, given his changing family picture, Kevin Warner is stepping down at Columbia. The nature of his employment as an airline pilot made things tricky even when his son was there, but now that Kaleb is at Campbell, plus the desire to see more of his daughters’ activities as they grow up, probably made the decision a bit easier. I have already met the new coach, Peter Whittington, and am looking forward to a continuing strong tie with the Tigers program. But Kevin will be missed. We saw eye-to-eye on more than just wrestling, and he went above and beyond to get me results from his Tiger Duals, particularly this past season.

After stepping away for a year, Brian Adkins is returning to the head-coaching ranks for the 2016-17 season, taking over for Dustin Foster at University Christian. For the best of reasons, Adkins resigned after the 2014-15 season, and an even better reason brought him back. Adkins will continue to run the Duval Wrestling Academy off-season & youth club program as well.

I’ll be polling the coaches a little later in the month, after I’m sure all the spring breaks are complete, to find out who is coming back and who is stepping down.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
