It’s Official — Maia’s a Laker

No, not THOSE Lakers.

I’d made mention, when we posted the Marcus Zeighler signing photo, that we were waiting to get official word on two kids that were planning to sign with Iowa community colleges — which has, time and time again, been a springboard for tons of Division I talent. Today, I got confirmation on one of those two, as Flagler Palm Coast’s Anthony “Kaz” Maia, the Bulldogs’ Matmen MVP this past season and a two-time state 3A finalist, will attend Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, IA, and wrestle for the Lakers.

I’ve had occasion to live and work in that part of the state. It is an absolute hotbed for wrestling. It should be a great way for Maia to continue his education and get himself in front of Division I wrestlers, many of whom start their careers at the same tournaments in which Maia will compete.

Here’s a photo of Maia’s visit, below:

Earlier in the summer, 3A state finalist Anthony “Kaz” Maia (Flagler Palm Coast ’16) visited a pair of community colleges in Iowa. Maia has elected to attend Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, IA, where he will wrestle for the Lakers starting in 2016-17. Maia was a two-time state finalist for the Bulldogs and is shown here with Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch (photo submitted by Tom Bartolotta).

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.

the wrestling room has Xavier Sampsel going to Limestone College to wrestle. I also know Jon Shoen signed with Dubuque University in Iowa

Neither of their parents have gotten with me, nor the kids themselves (Shawn has commented frequently here and Ms. Shoen friended me on Facebook). I reached out about Derek Miller as well to Coach Reape.

I have not spoken with Shawn but I did with Jon’s mom. She told me a few weeks ago she would let you know but she posted on the wrestling room instead
