The Scouting Report: 3A-District 9

Welcome to another edition of The Scouting Reports. Here, we take a spin through what the entire state of Florida has coming back. More information for you, the readers, is what we’re all about at Matmen. We’re starting with the completely out-of-area teams, as we just ran through each area team in the previous 3 months. The plan is to complete all 48 districts before most schools start. We can only highlight returners from last year based on post-season performances and we can only know so much about transfers. If someone out-of-area was hurt or just didn’t compete, I just won’t know about it (regardless of what may be or have been posted on other forums). One new wrinkle for this year. We’re focusing less on the individual histories of each wrestler and focusing more on their matches with local kids, and we’ll have a couple of tidbits on each team to show that focus.

Why knowing about the Tigers matters: Harvey went 1-2 at states, and was eliminated by Region 1’s TJ Boyd of Winter Springs in consi round 2. Tigers 2016 grad Nick Sorace (160) was 2-2 in the tournament, dropping a 3-2 quarterfinal decision to Region 1’s Jonathan Gomez, a 2016 Boone graduate.

Palm Beach Gardens
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 3rd at region, 22nd at states. 2015 — 6th at region, T-28th at states. 2014 — 4th at region, 19th at states.

Lot of graduation losses for the Gators to get past this coming year.

Why knowing about the Titans matters: Titans, also, will have some significant graduation losses to overcome. McNeal is Treasure Coast’s only wrestler with returning state experience. He edged Fleming Island’s Albie Snedaker, 11-10 in double overtime, in the first round at states. 2016 Titans grad Theo Gerve (220) lost 10-9 to Region 1’s Raimello Jackson (2016 Wekiva grad and eventual state runnerup) in the quarterfinals.

Why knowing about the Indians matters: Another program where substantial graduation losses will have to be overcome this coming season. 2016 graduate Geffery Cosgrave (285) picked up Vero Beach’s lone point at states, with a double-overtime consi round-1 win. Cosgrave was knocked out of the tournament by Region 1’s Tahj Glemaud, a 2016 Dr Phillips grad, in a 4-3 loss.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
