The Scouting Report: 2A-District 12

Welcome to another edition of The Scouting Reports. Here, we take a spin through what the entire state of Florida has coming back. More information for you, the readers, is what we’re all about at Matmen. We’re starting with the completely out-of-area teams, as we just ran through each area team in the previous 3 months. The plan is to complete all 48 districts before most schools start. We can only highlight returners from last year based on post-season performances and we can only know so much about transfers. If someone out-of-area was hurt or just didn’t compete, I just won’t know about it (regardless of what may be or have been posted on other forums). One new wrinkle for this year. We’re focusing less on the individual histories of each wrestler and focusing more on their matches with local kids, and we’ll have a couple of tidbits on each team to show that focus.

2A-District 12

2015-16 team finish: 1. Palmetto Ridge. 2. Barron Collier. 3. Golden Gate. 4. Cypress Lake. 5. Gulf Coast. 6. East Lee County. 7. South Fort Myers. 8. Naples. 9. Estero.
2014-15 team finish: 1. Palmetto Ridge. 2. Estero. 3. Golden Gate. 4. Barron Collier. 5. Gulf Coast. 6. Cypress Lake. 7. Naples. 8. South Fort Myers. 9. East Lee County. 10. Lehigh.
2013-14 team finish: 1. Palmetto Ridge. 2. Barron Collier. 3. Golden Gate. 4. Estero. 5. Cypress Lake. 6. South Fort Myers. 7. East Lee County. 8. Gulf Coast. 9. Naples. 10. Lehigh.

Barron Collier (Naples)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 9th at region, 19th at states. 2015 — 12th at region, 39th at states. 2014 — 15th at region, T-18th at states.
Individual returners: Jack Vandam (senior, 27-14 at 106, district runnerup); Sophia Pedone (junior, 19-22 at 120, 0-2 at districts); Kaiden Sears (sophomore, 1-22 at 126, 0-2 at districts); Jacob Davis (sophomore, 17-22 at 132, district 4th); Jairo Lopez (senior, 18-21 at 145, 1 match from regions); Noah Lopez (senior, 22-10 at 152, district 3rd); Malcow Casas (sophomore, 14-14 at 160, 1 match from regions); Rolfken Marc (senior, 28-19 at 170, 1 match from regions); Mitchell Dimeglio (sophomore, 12-10 at 182, 1 match from regions); Jack Simpson (senior, 38-10 at 195, district champ, region 4th).
Why knowing about the Cougars matters: Simpson was 0-2 at states and did not face any Region 1 competition, paired against eventual champion Joe Marcano of Brandon. 2016 Barron Collier grad Jamel Davis won states, avenging his Region 4 title loss against Riverdale’s Jesse Pryor in the title match. Davis pinned Leon’s JT Grant in the semifinals.

Cypress Lake (Fort Myers)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 12th at region, 25th at states. 2015 — 14th at region, 13th at states. 2014 — 17th at region, T-57th at states.
Individual returners: Ethan Cornett (sophomore, 21-12 at 106, district 3rd); Darius Rodriguez (sophomore, 13-17 at 113, district 4th; Jalen Soto (junior, 45-2 at 132, district champ, region 3rd, state runnerup); Charlie Minshall (sophomore, 18-14 at 152, 0-2 at districts); Jermaine Teague (junior, 40-13 at 160, district runnerup, region runnerup); Brian Gimenez (junior, 40-10 at 170, district runnerup); Jean Malivert (junior, 21-15 at 220, district 4th); Cole Lewis (junior, 23-23 at 285, district 4th).
Why knowing about the Panthers matters: Soto had an impressive tournament run enroute to his state runnerup medal, with three decisions (none against Region 1 opposition) leading up to the final and then coming up just a scoring maneuver short against Jensen Beach’s Konnor McHale in the final. Teague went 1-2 at states, also not against any Region 1 competition, falling out of the tournament in consi round 2 in a 10-4 loss to Pasco’s Miguel Angel Hernandez.

East Lee County (Lehigh Acres)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 19th at region, T-76th at states. 2015 — T-28th at region. 2014 — 30th at region.
Individual returners: Alexis Simpson (senior, 8-14 at 106, 0-2 at districts); Casco Monix (senior, 25-6 at 120, district 3rd, 1 match from states); Tyler Davis (junior, 8-3 at 126, 1 match from regions); Javier Vasquez (junior, 10-10 at 138, 1 match from regions); Darius Parker (sophomore, 22-11 at 170, district 4th); Ariel Talamantez (senior, 20-12 at 182, district runnerup); Charmar Cobb (junior, 9-6 at 285, 0-2 at districts).
Why knowing about the Jaguars matters: The Monix family represented East Lee County in fine fashion in 2015-16. Among this coming season’s returners, Casco Monix was the furthest to advance at regions, getting within one match of the state tournament. That barrier was reached by 2016 Jaguars graduate Carl Monix, who was 0-2 in the event, falling in the first round to 2016 Pace graduate Anthony Krevatas by a 9-3 score.

Other post-season stats: 2016 — 15th at region, T-41st at states. 2015 — 7th at region, T-17th at states. 2014 — 17th at region.
Individual returners: Brian Opalensky (junior, 42-16 at 120, district champ, region 3rd); Kyle Nesbit (senior, 47-9 at 126, district champ, region 4th, state 5th); Carlos Mota-Torres (junior, 17-14 at 285, district 3rd).
Why knowing about the Wildcats matters: Just three wrestlers suited up for the post-season, which is tough for a team that was second at districts just a year ago, but all three made it to the second round of the post-season and two got to states. And all three return. Opalensky was 1-2 at states, with no Region 1 competition, but did beat Region 2 champ Matthew Daner in consi rd 1 by a 6-2 score. Nesbit rallied all the way back for a medal after losing by tech fall in the first round to multiple-time state champ Kyle Norstrem of Brandon. He edged 2016 Lincoln graduate Sean Hendley, 2-1, in the blood round to ensure his place on the podium.

Golden Gate (Naples)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 13th at region, T-57th at states. 2015 — 13th at region, 14th at states. 2014 — 14th at region, T-51st at states.
Individual returners: Sherman Perry (sophomore, 8-23 at 106, 1 match from regions); Gerald Roger (sophomore, 18-13 at 120, district runnerup); David Ortiz (junior, 36-5 at 126, district runnerup, region 3rd); Samuel Acosta (sophomore, 3-8 at 132, 1 match from regions); Ricardo Ramos (junior, 30-8 at 138, district runnerup); Devin Price (junior, 42-10 at 152, district champ, region 3rd); Sebastian Etienne (junior, 14-17 at 160, 1 match from regions); Juan Martinez (senior, 19-12 at 182, district 4th); Eler Cabrera (senior, 27-9 at 220, district 3rd); Ivan Jose (junior, 24-14 at 285, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Titans matters: Ortiz was 1-2 at the state tournament, knocked out by Olympic Heights’ Ethan Altabet, 5-2, in consi round 2 after losing by major in the first round to Pasco finalist John DeAugustino. Price, also, was 1-2, winning his first round match, but then losing to eventual champ Julian Ramirez by fall in the quarters and then in consi round 2 by a 14-6 major to Creekside’s Brandon Dickman, himself a placer.

Gulf Coast (Naples)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — T-21st at region. 2015 — 27th at region. 2014 — T-18th at region.
Individual returners: Dean Nunziato (junior, 33-6 at 106, district champ); Sean Gibbons (junior, 28-15 at 113, 1 match from regions); Nicolas Rivera (junior, 24-18 at 120, 1 match from regions); Nick Levija (sophomore, 9-10 at 126, 1 match from regions); Mathew Guitard (senior, 23-18 at 132, district 3rd); Elliot Cortes (junior, 25-22 at 138, district 4th); Justin Piedra (junior, 21-6 at 145, 1 match from regions); Aiden Davis (senior, 24-9 at 152, 1 match from regions); Nikolas Perovic (junior, 19-18 at 182, district 3rd); Colton Stubelt (junior, 23-26 at 195, district 4th); Blake Wightman (sophomore, 5-23 at 220, 0-2 at districts); Aleksander Perovic (senior, 28-11 at 285, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Sharks matters: No qualifiers out to states — streak at least four years at this point — but Nunziato might be poised to break out at least, having made it to Saturday. He got lined up with Riverdale’s James Monos (an eventual third-place finisher at states), though, in the consi quarters, and that was not a matchup he would want.

Other post-season stats: 2016 — 20th at region, T-69th at states. 2015 — T-24th at region. 2014 — 29th at region.
Individual returners: Justus Disarro (junior, 19-19 at 106, 1 match from regions); Caleb Poche (senior, 37-14 at 113, district 3rd, region 4th); Luis Castellon (junior, 20-15 at 120, 0-2 at districts); Malcolm Wallace (sophomore, 19-18 at 126, district 4th); Kyle Chambers (junior, 1-5 at 132, 1 match from regions); Judah McLean (sophomore, 5-33 at 138, 0-2 at districts); Juan Cruz (junior, 34-9 at 145, district 3rd, 1 match from states); Matthew Meyer (senior, 17-14 at 170, 0-2 at districts); Zachary Miller (sophomore, 5-12 at 182, 1 match from regions); Dinel Chery (senior, 21-9 at 195, district runnerup); Robert Galvan (junior, 7-11 at 220, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Golden Eagles matters: Poche represented NHS at states, going 1-2 in that tournament. He lost to eventual runnerup Diamonte Perry of Lake Gibson by fall in the first round, and needed extra time to survive consi round 1 for his only win of the weekend.

Palmetto Ridge (Naples)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 2nd at region, 18th at states. 2015 — 2nd at region, 9th at states. 2014 — 1st at region, 6th at states.
Individual returners: Ben McCallister (sophomore, 28-14 at 106, district 4th); Rocco Pereira (junior, 39-2 at 113, district champ, region champ, 1 match from state podium); Jason Arrendondo (junior, 31-16 at 120, district 4th); Ryne Rosenbalm (senior, 51-13 at 126, district 3rd); George Zertopoulis (sophomore, 132, district runnerup, region runnerup, 1 match from state podium); Mitch Hamilton (junior, 39-17 at 138, district 3rd); Lance Lecuyer (junior, 44-15 at 145, district runnerup); Noah Rives (junior, 36-10 at 152, 1 match from regions); Joey Parmenter (senior, 170, district champ, region champ); Evan Gonzalez (junior, 16-10 at 195, 1 match from regions); Raymond Peralez (sophomore, 16-11 at 220, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Bears matters: Pereira was 2-2 at states after losing by fall in the first round. His only interaction with Region 1 was in consi round 1, when he decisioned Middleburg’s Briar Jackson by a 7-1 score. Zertopoulis, also, was 2-2 at states, with two wins over Region 1 opponents, including a 7-3 decision in consi round 1 over Orange Park’s Saeid Ejmali and a fall in the third period of consi round 2 over 2016 Crestview graduate Michael Cantwell. Parmenter was 1-2 at 170, with his only win coming in the first round, a 12-7 decision over 2016 Tate graduate Heath Herndon. Leading the charge for the Bears was 2016 graduate and two-time state champion Joey Nadotti, who closed out his run to gold with a 9-4 win on Saturday night in the finals over 2016 Lincoln grad Jaycie Rudd.

South Fort Myers
Other post-season stats: 2016 — T-17th at region, T-76th at states. 2015 — 23rd at region. 2014 — 21st at region, T-62nd at states.
Individual returners: Ben McDavitt (sophomore, 1-19 at 120, 1 match from regions); Chloe Mountain (sophomore, 3-23 at 126, 0-2 at districts); Joe Cilibrasi (senior, 25-9 at 138, district champ); Chester Hanley (junior, 14-13 at 145, 0-2 at districts); Sal Cilibrasi (senior, 20-6 at 152, district runnerup); Matt Blanchard (senior, 20-13 at 170, district 3rd).
Why knowing about the Wolfpack matters: 2016 graduate Jordari Rene (220) was the only SFMHS representative at states, going 0-2 but falling to a pair of state medalists, 6-4 to 3rd-place Silas Root of Harmony and then 3-2 in consi round 1 to Blanche Ely’s Marvens Saint Charles.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
