The Scouting Report: 3A-District 13

Welcome to another edition of The Scouting Reports. Here, we take a spin through what the entire state of Florida has coming back. More information for you, the readers, is what we’re all about at Matmen. We’re starting with the completely out-of-area teams, as we just ran through each area team in the previous 3 months. The plan is to complete all 48 districts before most schools start. We can only highlight returners from last year based on post-season performances and we can only know so much about transfers. If someone out-of-area was hurt or just didn’t compete, I just won’t know about it (regardless of what may be or have been posted on other forums). One new wrinkle for this year. We’re focusing less on the individual histories of each wrestler and focusing more on their matches with local kids, and we’ll have a couple of tidbits on each team to show that focus.

3A-District 13

2014-15 team finish: 1. Cypress Bay. 2. Cooper City. 3. Everglades. 4. McArthur. 5. South Plantation. 6. South Broward. 7. Western. 8. West Broward. 9. Nova. 10. Flanagan.

Cooper City
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 8th at region, T-36th at states. 2015 — T-11th at region. 2014 — 12th at region, T-26th at states.
Individual returners: Jacob Swartz (junior, 27-9 at 106, district 4th); Nicholas Luna (sophomore, 28-9 at 113, district 3rd); Christian Morales (junior, 31-10 at 120, district 3rd); Kyle Thompson (senior, 31-13 at 126, district 4th); Liam Jones (senior, 48-8 at 145, district champ, region 4th); Connor Jones (senior, 34-13 at 152, district runnerup); Eric Scarbrough (junior, 8-8 at 160, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Cowboys matters: The lighter Jones was 1-2 at states this past year, not facing Region 1 opposition. Jones faced placer Charles Small of Manatee (6th) in the first round, falling 9-5. 2016 Cowboys graduate Jozef Macugoski finished fifth at 195, with his two losses in the tournament coming against Fleming Island’s Jason Davis in the first round (fall in 1:42) and consi semis (OT loss, 3-1). Macugoski shut out Atlantic Coast’s Narek Stepanyan, 3-0, in the blood round to earn his podium spot. At 220, 2016 CCHS graduate Nick Guzman was 0-2, falling 7-2 in the first round to Fleming Island’s Jose Concepcion.

Cypress Bay (Weston)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 5th at region, T-26th at states. 2015 — 6th at region, T-34th at states. 2014 — 10th at region, T-52nd at states.

Why knowing about the Lightning matters: Pretty substantial graduation losses to overcome. Toribio was 0-2 at states, losing by fall in the first round to Region 1’s eventual state champion, Dr Phillips’ Dylan Meeks. 2016 Lightning graduate Glen Eisman (182) finished ofurth at states, losing in the quarters to eventual finalist Johnny Raich of Palm Beach Gardens. Eisman’s next loss wouldn’t come until the third-place match, where Fleming Island’s Ryan Smenda won by a 4-2 decision. Fellow graduate Carlos Osterling (195) was 1-2 at states, decisioning Region 1’s Jackson Saffold of Timber Creek, 3-1, but later being eliminated in consi round 2 by Atlantic Coast’s Stepanyan, 11-1.

Everglades (Miramar)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 13th at region, T-50th at states. 2015 — T-15th at region, T-68th at states. 2014 — 8th at region, T-28th at states.

Why knowing about the Gators matters: Pierre Nadhelo was 0-2 at states, getting eliminated from the tournament in consi round 1 by Fleming Island’s Albie Snedaker, by fall in the second period. 2016 Everglades graduate Nicholas Nogradi (160) was 1-2 in the tournament, losing 7-3 in the first round to Region 1’s Jonathan Gomez, a Boone graduate.

Flanagan (Pembroke Pines)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 23rd at region. 2015 — 27th at region. 2014 — 25th at region.

Why knowing about the Falcons matters: Third straight year without a state qualifier for Flanagan. Chanlatte is the only returner in the Falcon lineup with region experience.

Hollywood Hills (Hollywood)

Individual returners: Brandon Silvestre (senior, 35-14 at 106, district runnerup, 1 match from states); Alejandro Hueck (senior, 4-3 at 138, district runnerup, 1 match from states); Enrique Triana (junior, 15-14 at 152, 0-2 at districts); Antonio Heleno (junior, 4-10 at 160, 0-2 at districts); Pedro Heleno (senior, 21-12 at 195, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Spartans matters: No Hollywood Hills return with state experience, although two Spartans were clsoe. 2016 Spartan graduate Anthony Silvestre (113) was 1-2 at state, decisioning eventual placer Avery Holder of Flagler Palm Coast, 7-2, in the first round.

McArthur (Hollywood)

Why knowing about the Mustangs matters: Paillant was the only McArthur wrestler — returning or otherwise — that got to Saturday at regions.

Miramar
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 29th at region. 2015 — no program that competed in post-season. 2014 — 11th at region, T-32nd at states.
Individual returners: Julian Cortez Lesesne (sophomore, 2-8 at 120, 1 match from regions); Kenny Terry (junior, 5-11 at 126, 0-2 at districts); Cornelius White (junior, 6-8 at 132, 1 match from regions); Quino Mauricette (junior, 7-5 at 145, district 4th); Shane Rowe (junior, 7-7 at 152, 1 match from regions); Chris Smith (junior, 16-7 at 182, district 4th); Michael Williams (junior, 6-4 at 220, 0-2 at districts); La’Darius Bolden (senior, 3-8 at 285, 0-2 at districts).
Why knowing about the Patriots matters: Smith was the only Miramar wrestler to have a win at regions, with a consi round 1 fall. Tough rallying point after a year with no post-season program in 2015.

Nova (Davie)

Why knowing about the Titans matters: No Titans made it to Kissimmee in 2015-16, but Perez was just one match away after winning Nova’s only district title.

South Plantation (Plantation)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 24th at region. 2015 — 25th at region. 2014 — 24th at region.
Individual returners: Antonio Smith (senior, 14-9 at 126, 0-2 at districts); Austin Eason (junior, 19-10 at 132, district 4th); Avery McEvoy (senior, 14-7 at 182, 0-2 at districts); .
Why knowing about the Paladins matters: South Plantation has just one wrestler with returning region experience, and Eason didn’t pick up any wins there. It’s been at least four years since the Paladins were at states.

West Broward (Pembroke Pines)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — T-19th at region, T-71st at states. 2015 — T-22nd at region. 2014 — 21st at region.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
