The Scouting Report: 1A-District 16

Welcome to another edition of The Scouting Reports. Here, we take a spin through what the entire state of Florida has coming back. More information for you, the readers, is what we’re all about at Matmen. We’re starting with the completely out-of-area teams, as we just ran through each area team in the previous 3 months. The plan is to complete all 48 districts before most schools start. We can only highlight returners from last year based on post-season performances and we can only know so much about transfers. If someone out-of-area was hurt or just didn’t compete, I just won’t know about it (regardless of what may be or have been posted on other forums). One new wrinkle for this year. We’re focusing less on the individual histories of each wrestler and focusing more on their matches with local kids, and we’ll have a couple of tidbits on each team to show that focus.

1A-District 16

2015-16 team finish: 1. Key West. 2. Keys Gate. 3. Coral Shores. 4. island Christian. 5. Pinecrest Prep. 6. Westminster Christian. 7. Ransom Everglades.
2014-15 team finish: 1. Key West. 2. Keys Gate. 3. Westminster Christian. 4. Island Christian. 5. Coral Shores. 6. Pinecrest Prep. 7. Riviera Prep. 8. Ransom Everglades.
2013-14 team finish: 1. Key West. 2. Keys Gate. 3. Coral Shores. 4. Westminster Christian. 5. Palmer Trinity. 6. Pinecrest Prep. 7. Riviera Prep. 8. Ransom Everglades.

Coral Shores (Tavernier)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 10th at region, 15th at states. 2015 — 13th at region, 19th at states. 2014 — 17th at region.
Individual returners: Zach Rodriguez (sophomore, 4-10 at 106, 1 match from regions); Tyler Timothy (senior, 7-10 at 126, district champ); Jacob Sowder (senior, 4-8 at 145, 1 match from regions); Robert Oshaban (senior, 5-4 at 170, 1 match from regions); Oscar Zaldivar (senior, 5-14 at 195, district 4th).
Why knowing about the Hurricanes matters: Heavy graduation losses for Coral Shores after the 2015-16, with five of 11 post-season starters returning and six graduated, led by two-time 1A state champion Dante Jiovenetta (285). Jiovenetta won by fall in the quarters of states over 2016 Clay graduate Roland Samec and majored 2016 Episcopal grad Conor Chepenik, 15-4, in the title match. Another Hurricane grad, Lazaro Rodriguez (160), was 0-2 at states, falling in the first round to 2016 Westside graduate Caleb Gibbs, 8-5.

Island Christian (Islamorada)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 20th at region. 2015 — 24th at region. 2014 — no program per FHSAA.
Individual returners: Liam Davis (freshman, 19-8 at 106, district 3rd); Josh Gamez (freshman, 13-6 at 113, district 3rd); Carter Coussens (sophomore, 12-12 at 126, district runnerup); Damien Krakower (junior, 17-9 at 132, district runnerup); Jacob Craven (junior, 13-8 at 138, district runnerup); David Calderwood (senior, 21-7 at 145, district runnerup); Conner Martin (freshman, 6-8 at 160, 0-2 at districts); Zane Phair (senior, 8-13 at 170, 1 match from regions); Steven Dostaler (senior, 7-10 at 285, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Eagles matters: In second year of the program, Eagles bumped up four spots from their 2015 region finish and qualified six kids to the second week of the post-season, five of whom have the opportunity to return again in 2017-18. This program could move up a spot in districts, with Coral Shores losing so much talent.

Key West
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 3rd at region, 14th at states. 2015 — 4th at region, T-13th at states. 2014 — 3rd at region, T-46th at states.
Individual returners: Daniela Salvatierra (senior, 7-12 at 113, district 4th); Nickolas Piraino (senior, 23-5 at 120, district champ, region runnerup, 1 match from state podium); Adreanna Ortero (sophomore, 4-3 at 126, 1 match from regions); Oscar Lacayo (senior, 31-13 at 132, district champ, 1 match from states); Jesse Garcia (sophomore, 29-17 at 145, district 3rd); Jodael Deralus (senior, 29-17 at 152, district champ, 1 match from states); Josh Hettel (senior, 160, district 3rd, region 4th); Tyler Nitti (senior, 25-10 at 182, district champ); Ty Torres (junior, 23-15 at 195, district runnerup, 1 match from states); Isaac Exilus (senior, 220, district champ, region 3rd).
Why knowing about the Conchs matters: Piraino went 2-2 at states at 120, losing in the quarters to eventual champion Mason Wohltman of Lake Highland. Hettel was 1-2, with a pair of losses to Region 1 opponents, falling 12-5 in the first round to Suwannee’s Billy Jenkins and then taking an 8-5 loss in consi round 2 to Westside’s Gibbs. Exilus was 0-2 at 220, with a first-round loss by fall to Episcopal 2016 graduate Scott Dollison. 2016 Conchs grad Caleb Ashe reached the finals at 138, including a 4-2 semifinal victory over 2016 Clay graduate Julian Summa, and another 2016 Key West grad, Aaron Palacios, was 0-2 at 106, getting knocked out of states in consi round 1 by eventual third-place finisher Ben Buhler of Tampa Prep. Finally, 2016 Conchs graduate Jaden Glover took sixth at 285, which included a quarterfinal loss by fall to Episcopal’s Chepenik.

Keys Gate Charter (Homestead)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 5th at region, T-56th at states. 2015 — 5th at region, T-13th at states. 2014 — 7th at region, 42nd at states.
Individual returners: Jacob Delgado (sophomore, 24-13 at 106, district runnerup, region runnerup); Chris Jackson (senior, 12-7 at 120, district runnerup, 1 match from states); Brandon Molina (senior, 7-13 at 126, district 4th); Giancarlo Matute (senior, 3-9 at 132, 1 match from regions); Javaugn Garrison (senior, 11-18 at 152, district 4th); Raphael Hayes (senior, 4-3 at 195, district 3rd, 1 match from states); Jose Santiago (senior, 18-11 at 220, district 3rd); Xavier West (senior, 11-15 at 285, district 3rd).
Why knowing about the Knights matters: Keys Gate held its region spot from 2015, but losing a state champ and a second state qualifier from 2015 to South Dade meant a slide of 43 spots downward at states for the Knights. Delgado is Keys Gate’s lone returner with state experience, going 0-2 in Kissimmee with no Region 1 competition. 2016 Knights graduate Ron Evans (160) was 1-2 at states, with a first-round 2-0 win over 2016 Florida High grad Drew Hostetter, but then lost in the quarters by fall to eventual state champ Bryce Rogers of Lake Highland. Fellow Keys Gate 2016 grad Aryam Bonnin (170) also went 0-2, with no Region 1 matchups.

Pinecrest Prep (Miami)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 17th at region, T-63rd at states. 2015 — 19th at region, T-70th at states. 2014 — no known presence beyond districts.
Individual returners: Christian Hechavarria (freshman, 12-10 at 106, district 4th); Eric Alonso (8th, 6-13 at 120, 1 match from regions); Angel Notario (senior, 126, district 3rd); Oscar Bardinas (sophomore, 132, district 3rd); Xadier Alonso (senior, 4-6 at 138, district 3rd); Dreyson Rolle (sophomore, 170, district 4th); Wanderley Mesa (senior, 195, district champ, region 3rd).
Why knowing about the Crocs matters: Mesa was the lone bright light for Pinecrest, reaching the state tournament, where it was a quick two-and-out. In the first round, Mesa lost by fall in the first period of the first round to Florida High’s Cam Brown.

Ransom Everglades (Miami)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — T-26th at region. 2015 — 27th at region. 2014 — no known presence beyond districts.
Potential individual returners (years in school not reported to Trackwrestling): Harrison Tandy (145, 1 match from regions); Corey Kraftsow (152, 1 match from regions); Gilberto Mesa (160, 1 match from regions); Robert Baumann (182, district runnerup).
Why knowing about the Raiders matters: Ransom had just one contested victory at districts, and had just two qualifiers to regions, one returning in Baumann. Neither of the qualifiers at regions actually competed.

Riviera Prep (Miami)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — No post-season results noted. 2015 — 23rd at region. 2014 — T-20th at region, T-69th at states.
Individual returners: None; no post-season competition in 2015-16.
Why knowing about the Bulldogs matters: Hopefully Riviera Prep does make it back as a rebooted program in 2016-17.

Westminster Christian (Miami)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — T-15th at region, T-63rd at states. 2015 — 15th at region, T-70th at states. 2014 — 11th at region, T-52nd at states.
Individual returners: Cameron Sanchez (freshman, 6-11 at 106, 1 match from regions); Ignacio Haedo (freshman, 11-14 at 113, district runnerup); Jack D’Onofrio (8th, 9-15 at 120, district 4th); Dante Goicochea (senior, 4-19 at 132, 1 match from regions); Jonathan Gleason (freshman, 1-5 at 138, district 4th); Tristan Roca (sophomore, 13-16 at 145, district 4th); Marcus Valdes (sophomore, 10-10 at 160, district 4th); Anthony Machado (senior, 26-9 at 170, district runnerup, region 4th); Dylan Sanchez (senior, 20-10 at 285, district 4th).
Why knowing about the Warriors matters: Roca did knock off a district champion in his first exposure to the region-tournament atmosphere, decisioning Jupiter Christian’s Austin Tuttle 7-5 in round 1. Other than Machado qualifying out, however, there wasn’t much else to celebrate for the Warriors at Region 4. Machado was 0-2 at states, falling to eventual state champ Elijah Cleary of Lake Highland by fall in the first round and then by major to Region 1’s Cole Maddox of Marianna, 21-9, in consi round 1.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
