The Scouting Report: 3A-District 14

Welcome to another edition of The Scouting Reports. Here, we take a spin through what the entire state of Florida has coming back. More information for you, the readers, is what we’re all about at Matmen. We’re starting with the completely out-of-area teams, as we just ran through each area team in the previous 3 months. The plan is to complete all 48 districts before most schools start. We can only highlight returners from last year based on post-season performances and we can only know so much about transfers. If someone out-of-area was hurt or just didn’t compete, I just won’t know about it (regardless of what may be or have been posted on other forums). One new wrinkle for this year. We’re focusing less on the individual histories of each wrestler and focusing more on their matches with local kids, and we’ll have a couple of tidbits on each team to show that focus.

3A-District 14

2015-16 team finish: 1. Miami Beach. 2. North Miami. 3. Mater Academy. 4. Hialeah Gardens. 5. Dr Krop. 6. Reagan. 7. American Sr.
2014-15 team finish: 1. North Miami. 2. Miami Beach. 3. Reagan. 4. Dr Krop. 5. Hialeah Gardens. 6. American Sr.
2013-14 team finish: 1. North Miami. 2. Hialeah Gardens. 3. Miami Beach. 4. Reagan. 5. Dr Krop. 6. American Sr.

American Sr (Hialeah)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 29th at region. 2015 — 31st at region. 2014 — 31st at region.
Individual returners: Taha Baltagi (senior, 7-10 at 113, district 3rd); Geowel Silvestre (sophomore, 12-7 at 126, district champ); Alex Vale (senior, 0-4 at 132, 1 match before regions); Sean Singh (senior, 16-6 at 138, district champ); Hassan Durne (senior, 7-13 at 145, district 4th); Henry Borges (senior, 6-10 at 152, 1 match before regions); Dervil Dixon (senior, 6-9 at 285, 1 match before regions).
Why knowing about the Patriots matters: American picked off district titles at two weights — not bad for a group at the back of the pack team-wise in the district — but the Patriots had just one individual victory at regions, and that was a forfeit win in consi round 1 from Singh at 138.

Dr Krop (Miami)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 27th at region. 2015 — 21st at region. 2014 — T-26th at region.
Individual returners: Abraham Betancourt (junior, 11-7 at 132, district 3rd); Isiah Saintfirmin (senior, 3-12 at 138, 1 match from regions); Devin Pryor (junior, 19-8 at 152, district 4th); Emmanuel St. Germain (sophomore, 13-10 at 182, district 4th); Mardochee Telfort (junior, 20-9 at 195, district runnerup); Jordany Bruny (senior, 4-6 at 285, district runnerup).
Why knowing about the Lightning matters: It’s been at least four years since Dr Krop had any wrestlers in Kissimmee for the state tournament. Telfort was the only Lightning wrestler to make it to Saturday at regions, going 2-2 in that tournament. Everybody in the post-season lineup has the potential to return in 2016-17.

Hialeah Gardens
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 18th at region. 2015 — 30th at region. 2014 — 19th at region, T-62nd at states.
Individual returners: Christian Herrera (sophomore, 6-13 at 106, district runnerup); Giovanni Martinez (senior, 18-7 at 120, district 3rd); Giancarlos Castillo (senior, 6-17 at 126, 1 match from regions); Nicolas Benavides (senior, 10-19 at 160, district 4th); David Estrada (senior, 2-13 at 182, 1 match from regions); Christopher Aguila (senior, 5-6 at 220, district 3rd).
Why knowing about the Gladiators matters: Martinez and Aguila both had one win at regions, but neither they nor the rest of the returning Gladiators were able to get past Friday at regions. 2016 Gardens graduates Zachary Rendueles (152) and Lazaro Diaz (285) were both one match short of states.

Mater Academy (Hialeah Gardens)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 17th at region. 2015 — 10th at 2A-District 16, T-29th at 2A-Region 4. 2014 — 1st at 2A-District 16, 4th at 2A-Region 4, T-30th at 2A states.
Individual returners: Jonathan Ley (7th, 35-7 at 106, district champ); Karim Adel (junior, 10-9 at 113, district runnerup); Omar Adel (junior, 8-9 at 120, district 4th); Steven Villalobos (freshman, 13-9 at 126, district 3rd); Cristian Gonzalez (junior, 9-9 at 132, district 4th); Yandry Guerra (senior, 6-8 at 138, district runnerup); Darries Rodriguez (junior, 20-17 at 145, district runnerup); Ricardo Hamilton (junior, 9-14 at 152, 1 match from regions); Brandon Castro (junior, 22-9 at 160, district 3rd); Michael Sanchez (junior, 6-11 at 170, district 3rd); Juan Mendoza (sophomore, 14-12 at 182, 1 match from regions); Phyllip Lopez (senior, 8-11 at 195, district 4th).
Why knowing about the Lions matters: The good news for Mater Academy is having 12 post-season starters back, 10 of them with region experience. However, the downside is another year with no returners with state experience. 2016 graduate Miguel Capote (220) got the furthest of any Lion wrestler at regions, falling just one match short of states.

Miami Beach
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 7th at region, T-45th at states. 2015 — T-15th at region. 2014 — 14th at region, 22nd at states.
Individual returners: Anthony Bolivar (junior, 10-7 at 106, district 3rd); Daishaun Felton (junior, 22-6 at 113, district champ, 1 match from states); Dilan Christensen (senior, 1-3 at 126, district runnerup); Jackson Wenberg (sophomore, 10-11 at 138, district 4th); Najat Morgan (senior, 7-11 at 152, district 3rd); Adrian Perez (senior, 170, district runnerup, region 4th).
Why knowing about the Hi-Tides matters: After being in contention the previous two seasons, the Hi-Tides finally broke through with a district title in February, but defending it might be difficult, as graduation losses hit hard. Perez went 1-2 at states at 170, with a 3-1 decision over Boca Raton’s Manny Paules sandwiched by second-period losses by fall, the second against Region 1’s Jude Moore, a 2016 Boone graduate. 2016 Hi-Tides graduate Yisrael Londono (145) was 2-2 and one match from the state podium without facing any Region 1 competition.

North Miami
Other post-season stats: 2016 — 11th at region, T-29th at states. 2015 — 7th at region, T-30th at states. 2014 — 2nd at region, 6th at states.
Individual returners: David Mompoint (senior, 16-6 at 120, district champ, 1 match from states); Eluckson Francois (senior, 6-13 at 126, district 4th); Robby Mercier (junior, 132, district runnerup); Max Laurore (junior, 15-8 at 138, district 3rd); Terrell Frager (sophomore, 2-5 at 145, district 3rd); Steevens Pierre-Francois (junior, 1-4 at 160, 1 match from regions); Jonathan Laurent (senior, 8-7 at 182, district champ).
Why knowing about the Pioneers matters: No returners with state experience, although Mompoint was 1 match from states and Laurore and Laurent both also got to Saturday at regions. As for the Pioneers’ state performance, that was generated by 2016 graduate Deandre Chery (170), who was fourth. Chery lost in the first round, but was 2-1 against Region 1 opponents on the backside, eliminating Boone’s Moore with a 10-2 major in the blood round, pinning 2016 Fleming Island graduate John Martorano in the consi semis, and then falling 7-6 in the third-place match to 2016 Lyman graduate Kahtrell Treadwell.

Reagan (Doral)
Other post-season stats: 2016 — T-19th at region. 2015 — 24th at region. 2014 — 23rd at region.
Individual returners: Maximillian Correa (senior, 5-20 at 120, 1 match from regions); Ellery Albarran (sophomore, 11-23 at 132, 1 match from regions); Richard Mayol (senior, 33-16 at 160, district runnerup, 1 match from states); Adrian Nova (senior, 20-13 at 182, district runnerup); Gabriel Barrocas (senior, 25-11 at 195, district champ, 1 match from states); Maximillian Alvarez (junior, 9-22 at 285, 1 match from regions).
Why knowing about the Bison matters: Like Hialeah Gardens and Mater Academy, the Bison had at least one wrestler fall one match short of states, but at least Reagan’s two — Mayol and Barrocas — will return; both could be shoo-ins to get to the show in 2017.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
