#NextLevel: Wednesday, December 7

ESTHERVILLE, IA — Something had to give when it came to bragging rights between the nation’s two teams tied for #3 in the NJCAA national poll, Iowa Western CC and Iowa Lakes CC.

While one team did, ultimately, win the dual (host Lakes, by a 20-18 score), from a Northeast Matmen standpoint both sides had “wins” Wednesday night.

Laker freshman Kaz Maia (Flagler Palm Coast ’16), ranked #6 nationally at 149 pounds, won his match, taking an 11-7 decision over the Reivers’ Tell Ward for his win.

That win came immediately after Iowa Western’s Derek Miller (Clay ’16), who moved up from 133 to 141 for this dual, won 11-4 over the Lakers’ Kylan Sheets.

The only downside locally came at 174, where Eric Vigo (Flagler Palm Coast ’16) made a start for the Lakers, losing by fall in 1:42 to the nation’s #2 at 174, Iowa Western’s Preston Lauterbach.

In other local #NextLevel action:

Robert Parland (University Christian ’13, Coker College): In his team’s 22-18 loss to Belmont Abbey Wednesday night in the Art Meets Art dual at home, Parland took a 5-3 loss to the Crusaders’ Chass Delgado, competing at 285.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
