Dec 9 Dual Recap: Flagler-Freedom

Northeast Florida Matmen staff report

ORLANDO — In a rare December Friday night where the gym is partially covered in wrestling mat for a single dual, #2T Flagler Palm Coast traveled down the I-4 corridor for a solid 51-24 win over Freedom, a team that finished 11th at 3A states last year.

The dual was the Bulldogs’ first in 2016-17 and second competition of the season after ranking as the highest north Florida team at Border Wars the previous weekend.

A trio of middleweight decisions from FPC really cemented down the edge in the Bulldogs’ favor, with Avery Holder (132, by a 10-3 score) over 2016 3A-Region 1 champ Marcus Jean Baptiste, first-year starter Damion Figuorea (138, 12-10) over senior Earl Johnson, and Michael Martins (145, injured last year, 4-3) over 2016 3A-Region 1 runnerup Brendan Maharaj, plus a fall from Tyrone Jones at 152.

On the bookend sides of the dual, John Johnson (106) and Michael DeAugustino (120) held down the lower end with falls, while Curtis Brock (170), Steve Canidate (182), Tyler Irigoyen (220) and Vincent Ebanks (285) locked up pins for the uppers. Half of Freedom’s 24 points came via forfeits.

FPC is now off until Friday of this week, when the Bulldogs will take part in the Bill Scott Memorial IBT hosted by Lyman on Friday and Saturday.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
