Northeast Florida Matmen staff report
DAYTONA BEACH — For the second time in as many dual tournaments this month, Matanzas completed the day Saturday with a 3-2 record.
But the 3-2 that the Pirates generated at the Ray Hollingsworth Duals, hosted by Seabreeze HS, felt much more hard-won — and at a higher cost — as all three of Matanzas’ upper-most upper weights didn’t finish the day.
Matanzas started strongly, taking wins over New Smyrna Beach (46-36) and Jones (72-12) before falling to eventual tournament runnerup Atlantic (51-30, in a rematch of Wednesday’s dual). The Pirates did rally for a 54-21 victory over the hosts, but West Orange — the dual tournament champion — closed out the day with a 46-24 win over Matanzas.
Ethan Goodman (106, 3 pins), Noel Alicea (132/138, pin & decision) and Christopher Mixan (170, 3 pins & decision) all were 5-0 for the Pirates (6-5), with two other wrestlers — Josh Bower (3 pins at 120) and Lawrence Russo (3 pins & decision at 132/138) — completing a 4-1 day.
Bower, Russo, Ian Eckert (145), Mixan and Daniel Leonard (285) had falls in the win over New Smyrna Beach, with White adding a major decision. Against Jones, Goodman, White, Russo, Eckert, Daryin Newsome (152), Mixan, Christian Zaborowski (220) and Leonard had pins.
In the loss to Atlantic, Goodman, Bower, Alicea, Newsome and Mixan had falls, and that was when the uppers’ drops started, with Leonard sustaining injury-default in that dual. He was joined by 195-pound Tyrel Scheltz on the sidelines in the Pirates’ dual with Seabreeze, in which Bower, Russo, Newsome and Jakobi Givens had pins.
Zaborowski also was sidelined for the West Orange dual, in which Goodman and MaKayla Wilder (113) had pins. White, Alicea, Russo and Mixan all won with decisions.
Matanzas is now off until Wednesday, when the Pirates host DeLand at 7 p.m.
