PALM COAST — Strength at the bookends propelled Deland to a nonconference dual victory at Matanzas Wednesday night, as the visiting Bulldogs handed the Pirates a 42-34 defeat in Matanzas’ 2016-ending dual.
Deland jumped out to an 18-0 lead behind falls from 195 through 285, extending that lead to 27-6 after Ethan Goodman (106) got the Pirates (6-6) on the scoreboard with a third-period fall.
Matanzas cut Deland’s lead to 27-22 with six weights to go on a pair of forfeits and a major decision from Lawrence Russo at 138, but another Bulldog run of three wins from 145 through 160 put the dual away. Christopher Mixan (170) and Jakobi Givens (182) closed out the night with falls for the Pirates.
Matanzas is now off until January 13, when the Pirates will compete in the Flagler Duals, a two-day dual tournament hosted by crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast.
