January 3 Dual Recap

Northeast Florida Matmen staff report

LAKE CITY — Newly-listed honorable-mention Columbia cranked up the pinning machine Tuesday night to kick off the new year.

The Tigers recorded seven falls to roll past Gainesville, 54-28, in prepping for this weekend’s Cradle Cancer Invitational, a two-day IBT hosted by Jensen Beach.

While Gainesville (7-14) controlled the bookend weights — for the most part — Columbia (5-2) put the dual away with better strength in the middle, where six of its seven falls came through.

Chace Curtis (Northeast #2 at 126), Matt Ross (Northeast #8 at 132), Daniel Mann (Northeast #7 at 138), Matt Raulerson (Northeast #8 at 145), Zion James (Northeast #6 at 160), Chad Sapp (Northeast #10 at 170, bumping up to 182) and Chris Williams (285) picked up the pins for the Tigers.

Gainesville’s points came via fall from Corey Ryan (Northeast T-10 at 182, first appearance at 170 Tuesday night), plus an injury-default victory from Nathan Fox (106) and a major from Scotty Tacinelli (Northeast #8 at 113, bumping up to 120 Tuesday), plus a pair of forfeits.

Columbia will begin Cradle Cancer action on Friday. Gainesville is off until January 14, when the Hurricanes will compete in the Trojan Invitational, hosted by Lincoln.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
