#NextLevel: January 12

Northeast Florida Matmen staff report

NEWBERRY, SC — College duals still sometimes start with the littler guys and finish with the heavies, and close duals make every move the bigs make that much more critical.

Thursday night, Newberry found themselves in just such a dual, trailing visiting Ouachita Baptist for most of the night before 285-pound Nick Weldon’s late takedown in the third period helped the Wolves escape with a 20-18 dual win under the tutelage of Clay alumnus Cy Wainwright.

Weldon’s takedown, with one second left on the clock, led him to a 4-3 decision and the team win.

Jordan Simpson (133) had a fall for the Wolves, with majors coming from Nick Young (165) and Huston Evans (174).

Newberry will be off until next weekend, when the Wolves will begin ECAC conference duals at Limestone College.

Meanwhile, here’s one look at individual Matmen-area alumni competing at the #NextLevel:

Robert Parland (University Christian ’13, Coker College): Picked up one of the Cobras’ two dual victories in a 33-8 loss Thursday night at Limestone. Parland, ranked seventh in Super Region Two in Division II, downed Tyreek Smith, 5-2. I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
