ORANGE PARK — In a county where every wrestling program is above-average, every time two Clay County programs meet has a chance to become a battle.
Thursday night, it took Oakleaf every ounce of middleweight strength it could muster to hold off visiting Orange Park, as the Clay Knights held off the Raiders, 41-39.
Orange Park built the early advantage in the dual, 18-6, behind the pins of Shaun Bizzell (285) and Frank Sawyer (120), plus a forfeit at 106, against the fall of Ryan Rosano (113) for Oakleaf.
But the Knights won five of the next six matches from 126 through 160, with pins from Ethan Gustilo (132), Trenton Carroll (145), Donovan Gray (152) and Isaiah Graham (160), plus a technical fall from Vince Karl (126).
Orange Park made its push starting at 170, winning three of the last four, but Jason Mitchell’s pin at 182 sealed the Knights’ victory.
Nartorian Lee (170), Reed Danielson (195) and Tyler Dehart (220), plus a similar win during Oakleaf’s middles run for Dashner St. Vilus (138), had pins to close out for Orange Park.
Oakleaf is off until the Camden Callout on Saturday, while Orange Park swings back into action on Friday at the St Johns River Conference meet at Matanzas, a two-day round-robin duals event.
