SNELLVILLE, GA — Yulee has built itself around lower-weight strength over the past couple of seasons.

This past weekend, however, the Hornets’ lone champion at the North Metro Tournament, hosted by Brookwood HS, located in the north Atlanta suburbs, was one of their bigs.

McKenzie Lewis brought home Yulee’s lone bracket, winning the 285-pound weight class, as the Hornets finished seventh out of 18 teams in the two-day IBT.

Lewis had a 25-second fall in the quarters, advanced with a walkover to the finals, and then decisioned top seed Noah Latzsch of Chatahoochee, 7-5, in the finals.

The Hornets came away with three more medals in the tournament, in which they scored 103 points. Host Brookwood had a 32.5-point margin of victory over Ola for the team win.

Stevie Chopek reached the finals at 113, with a major decision in the quarters and decision in the semis, falling to Ola’s Hunter Daniel, 5-2, in the final.
Grant Stanish (138) lost in the first round of his bracket, but then won five matches to come back for third, avenging his first-round loss in the consi semis. John Parker (160) had three bonus-point wins in taking third at his weight.

Brackets from the weekend will be posted to the website on Monday. The Hornets are off until Friday, when they’ll compete at Raines’ 5 Star Invitational, also an IBT event.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
