(Editor’s Note: Four of 5 duals were submitted in timely manner, with reasonable circumstances for a missing fifth, later provided with assistance from Orlando Sentinel).
DELAND — St. Augustine finished fifth out of six teams in the DeLand Duals on January 14, going 1-4 in the one-day, six-team dual tournament.
The Yellow Jackets (3-14 at time of event completion) defeated Colonial, 42-24, in the third of five rounds, with losses to the hosts (60-18), Bayside (48-36), event champion University (Orlando) (66-18) and Seminole (42-36).
The first dual saw DeLand take wins in all of the contested matches, with all of St. Augustine’s points coming via forfeits. That wasn’t the case against Bayside, in which the Yellow Jackets picked up pins from Timothy Alalla (126), Nick Thomson (138), Tracey Beshara (160) and Cade Aupsburger (182).
Against Colonial, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 24-6 lead and made that lead hold up. Alalla, Marcus Petersen (152) and Aupsburger had falls in that victory for St. Augustine. Points came harder against University (Orlando), with Alalla and Jacob Linden (152) taking the only contested wins.
In the final dual of the day, St. Augustine got out to an 18-0 lead, but Seminole’s bookend weights brought it back for the dual victory. Alalla, Thomson (wrestling at 132), Petersen (wrestling at 145), Linden, Beshara and Aupsburger all won by fall for the Yellow Jackets.
On the day, Alalla was 5-0 with four pins, while Aupsburger and Linden were both 4-1.
St. Augustine was off until last weekend, when it competed in the St Johns River Conference at Matanzas (recap coming later today).
