GREEN COVE SPRINGS — Clay County rivals Clay and Fleming Island should have quite an uncivil battle on their hands on Saturday in the second day of the 18th annual Green Cove Springs Rotary tournament, at Clay HS.
The Blue Devils and Golden Eagles hold substantial leads on the rest of the field in the 40-team, two-day IBT event, as Clay leads after Friday’s first day with 147 points, with Fleming Island second at 142.5, double the point total of third-place Florida High (71.5).
“Semis, that’s the separation point,” Fleming Island coach PJ Cobbert said. “Tomorrow, we’ve got to get ’em amped up even more. Today was about doing what we were supposed to do today and tomorrow, do what you have to do to get in the finals.”
Clay had nearly nine days off after falling to the Golden Eagles at #UncivilWar2017, using that time to rest, and it seemed to help Friday.
“We’re back (to) ascending again. We got some rest last weekend and (now) we’ve got way more jump in our step,” Clay coach Jim Reape said. “We hadn’t had a good last couple of weeks. Today, I thought we wrestled hard, moved our feet better, and it showed for a lot of our guys.”
Florida High is three points ahead of Tampa Jesuit for third place, with Arnold and St. Cloud tied for fifth at 60 pionts. Oakleaf is a half-point up on Middleburg, 55.5-55, for seventh, with Creekside ninth at 51 points and Niceville 10th at 45.
While almost everyone in the tournament is still alive going into today, as only one round of consolations was wrestled Friday, here’s a list of semifinalists. Wrestling starts Saturday with consolation action at 9:30 a.m.
