Northeast Florida Matmen staff report

KISSIMMEE — Among north Florida teams competing at this weekend’s 2017 Girls’ State tournament at Liberty HS, Matanzas scored the highest, finishing in a tie for 15th place with 37 points.

Niceville was in a tie for 32nd place, with 24 points, while Terry Parker tied for 49th with 11, Bay tied for 52nd with nine, Arnold and Baker County tied for 60th with six and Edward H. White was tied for 68th, with four.

Dr. Phillips won the girls’ team title with 219.5 points, with host Liberty in second at 201, Osceola third at 163, Miami Jackson fourth at 100 and Freedom (Orlando) fifth at 95.

Below follows a roundup of each north Florida competitor in the event:

97: Emma Allsbrooks (Niceville) placed third in the weight class, reaching the semis. Allsbrooks had three falls on the front side over South Lake’s Courtney Parmenter (2:30), Freedom’s Yaretzy Silva (:36) and Evans’ Shanese Rodriguez (1:14), falling 11-9 to runnerup Jessica Corredor of Dr Phillips. On the back side, Allsbrooks downed East Lee County’s Alexis Simpson, 4-2, in the consi semis, then pinned McArthur’s Tania Diaz in 50 seconds to take third.

106: Julia Merrill (Arnold) was 3-2, losing on the front side by fall to Hernando’s Heaven-Leigh Jackson in 5:36. Merrill won three matches by decision, 3-0 over McArthur’s Ariel Khan, 3-1 in overtime over Lyman’s Machael Richardson and 3-1 over Freedom’s Bianca Lucate, before falling 2-0 to Admiral Farragut’s Angela LoRusso. Brianna Thornton (Baker County) was 1-2, with a fall over University (Orlando)’s Kayla Murzyki in 4:42, but then lost 12-9 in the round of 16 to Lake Howell’s Britney Mantz. Thornton then lost 8-5 to Lucate on the back side. Finally, Amber Goodbread (Terry Parker) was 0-2, losing by fall to Jackson in 48 seconds in the first round, and then Liberty’s Abbigail Lewiston in 1:13.

113: MaKayla Wilder (Matanzas) placed fourth in the weight class, with three wins on the front to reach the semis. Wilder pinned University (Orlando)’s Alyssa Bruno in 2:41, King’s Camile Dodson in 1:07, and won 11-9 in sudden victory over Coral Reef’s Samantha Smith, losing by fall in the semis to Miami Jackson’s Hilary Geffrard in 1:27. Wilder won her consi semi, 1-0, over Riverdale’s Tristen Lee, but lost 8-4 in the third place match to Freedom’s Fabiola Molina. Trophie Long (Bay) was 1-2, losing her first match, 13-4, to Molina, but rallied in the consis, with a fall in 1:44 over DeLand’s Reanna Murphy before losing to Hernando’s Samantha Gommier, 4-2. Reema Sabella (Terry Parker) was 0-2 in the tournament, losing in the first round in 3:53 to Gommier, then to Apopka’s Sarah Belizaire in 38

120: Isabeau Brathwaite (Ed White) was 0-2, losing by fall to Seminole’s Rebecca Mathewson in 31 seconds, then lost by fall in 41 seconds to Nova’s Anaiah Rivera.

126: Torrie Adams (Bay) reached the quarterfinals, going 2-2 in the event. Adams pinned SW Miami’s Stephanie Benavides in 3:28, and won 10-3 over West Orange’s Suhailie Rivera, but then lost in the quarters to Olympic Heights’ Charlotte Stewart by fall in 1:26. Adams then lost on the back side to Osceola’s Madison Duncan, 12-2.

132: Jazlyn Villalona (Ed White) was 1-2, losing by fall in the first round to Evans’ Courtney Sherman. On the consi side, Villalona decisioned Mitchell’s Lauren Sawyer, 2-0, but then fell to Liberty’s Tatiyana Smith by fall in 41 seconds. Jaelyn Reyes (Terry Parker) was also 1-2, losing by fall in 4:13 to South Lake’s Karyn Larkin in the first round and then winning in consis by a 7-4 score over Evans’ Majorie Valcin, before falling to Dr Phillips’ Mikayla Fountain by injury-default. Tytianna Hagens (Bay) was 0-2, losing 6-4 in the first round to Land O’Lakes’ Marissa Mallozzi, and then falling in consis to Smith, 7-5.

138: Angelina Bermudez (Matanzas) was 4-2, taking fifth in the bracket and reaching the semis. Bermudez had three falls on the front side, pinning Oak Ridge’s Sadia Meronne (1:59), Osceola’s Mariah Ledesma (1:13), and Cypress Creek’s Laura Gerry (1:13) before losing in the semis to eventual champion Ashley Mendez of Lake Brantley, by fall in 3:20. Bermudez lost in the consi semis by fall in 1:45 to Dr. Phillips’ Jennifer Gabriel, but then pinned Olympic Heights’ Hanna Costa in 1:28 for fifth.

145: China Sneed (Terry Parker) went 2-2, losing by fall in the round of 16 to Osceola’s Kaelyn Martinez, the eventual champ, in 58 seconds. Sneed won twice on the back side, with a forfeit win over Freedom’s Zarai Travis and then by fall in 59 seconds over University (Orlando)’s Gabriela Valentine, before losing by fall in 2:58 to University (Orlando)’s D’Andria Hollins.

170: Emily Mills (Terry Parker) was 0-1, losing by fall in the first round to eventual runnerup Antonia Maple of Pasco in 1:39.
