TALLAHASSEE — A host of Northeast Florida teams are attempting to chase down the leaders after the first day of competition at the 2A-Region 1 meet Friday at Chiles HS.

Creekside is third in the 27-team tournament, with 54 points, with Bartram Trail fourth at 52 and Middleburg fifth at 51.5.

Ridgeview (6th, 46 points), Nease (7th, 45) and Columbia (10th, 40), plus 11th-place Orange Park at 38.5 points, are still well within range for team contention.

Creekside finished the day with seven wrestlers left alive in the tournament, including semifinalists Luke Davis (106, forfeit and major), Brandon Dickman (170, 2 first-period pins) and Corey Grower (195, forfeit and fall).

On the back side of the bracket, Jake Summers (120), Jacob Cooney (145), Brendan Jones (152) and Trey Chesser (182) are still left alive.

Bartram Trail has six wrestlers left in, with four semifinalists in Nicholas Vugman (113, 2 pins), Matt Pickett (138, fall and decision), Brooks Harp (195, 2 falls) and Kolton McDaniel (2 first-period pins at 220). Kevin Williams (152) and Justin Thompson (285) are in the wrestlebacks.

Like Creekside, Middleburg also has seven wrestlers left, three of those semifinalists in Chris Burch (126, forfeit & major), Trenton Carroll (145, fall and overtime decision) and Bailey Barnard (285, 2 pins). Still in wrestlebacks for the Broncos are Tazz Hampton (106), Cody Eastwood (160), Dylan Hanna (170) and Bryan Heflin (182).

And Ridgeview has the same seven-wrestler, three-semifinalist composition going into the semis, with Marcus Reid (120, 2 falls), Tanner Belden (126, decision & fall) and Saeid Ejmali (138, 2 pins) in the semis and Jacob McGowan (132), Malachi Martin (145), Reed Propes (152) and Kenneth Tresvant (285) still in the consis.

Nease, Columbia and Orange Park each also have three semifinalists after Friday’s rounds. For the Panthers, Sean Arnold (113, 2 pins), Jacob Satterfield (132, 2 pins) and Tanner Hill (152, fall and major) are in the semis, with Nick Thoresen (195) in the consis.

Columbia’s semifinalists are Chace Curtis (126, forfeit and pin), Matt Ross (fall & decision at 132) and Daniel Mann (major & decision at 138), with Martin Lee (113) and Ian McGuigan (120) both in the consi rounds.

For Orange Park, Nartorian Lee (170, 2 pins), Reed Danielson (182, fall and decision) and Tyler Dehart (220, forfeit and pin) all are in the final four, with Cameron Broughton (106) in the wrestlebacks.

Both Matanzas (14th, 30 points) and Terry Parker (T-17th, 27) have one semifinalist each, with the Pirates’ being Christopher Mixan (170, 2 decisions) and Braves’ being D’Angelo Johnson (160, 2 first-period pins). Consi-round wrestlers for Matanzas are Josh Bower (113), Stone White (120), Lawrence Russo (126) and Noel Alicea (132), while for Terry Parker, Landon Dains (160), Ben Sabella (195) and Zachary Smith (220) are in the consis.

Three teams — Englewood (19th place, 26 points), St. Augustine (22nd, 16) and Ponte Vedra (23rd, 15) — have two wrestlers left. Both of the Rams wrestlers in the tournament are semifinalists in Tavian Whitehead (160, fall and major) and Michel Augustin (182, pin & decision).

St. Augustine has Jacob Linden (145) and Tracey Beshara (160) in the consis, and Ponte Vedra also has two in the wrestleback side in Gavin Riccobono (106) and James Stanton (132).

Gainesville (21st, 18 points) will be represented by one wrestler in Corey Ryan (160), while Stanton (25th, 5 points) also has just one left, also in the 160 wrestlebacks, with Mitchell Mika.

Finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday.
