Offseason Weekend Recap

BRADENTON — The north Florida area saw a few wrestlers earn place finishes in the Team Florida Folkstyle Championships, wrestled this past weekend at Manatee HS.

There were two apparent tournaments that took place, per TrackWrestling brackets. It’s not immediately clear why this was the case (we’ll be happy to edit this if someone can clear this up).

In juniors, we saw two locals win, as Jose Sanchez (145) and Nick Hobday (152), both wrestling for Beach Rats, win titles, while James Knox (132) was second.

North Florida Wrestling Academy’s Joseph Donato (113), War Eagle’s Luke Davis (120) and Oakleaf HS’ Storm Mercado (138) placed second in cadets, while Logan Kline was third at 113.

Kevin Beverly (Yulee) won the schoolboy title at 175, while Liam Davis (Clay WC) took third in intermediates at 65.

In the Saturday tournament in JV, Mercado took first at 138, while Kline added another third at 113. That tournament also saw Clay’s Gunner Ivey take first in novice at 85 and Dominic Martin finish second at 112 in schoolboy.

Clay’s Michael Miceli added a first in the intermediate division at 60, while Cassidy Miceli was second at 65.

If the FWCA event at Brandon ever posts full brackets, that event being held on Saturday, we’d be able to update this story as well. I know that Clay wrestlers Christian Downs and Ryan Rivers won titles in their weight classes, seconds were won by Carson Yost, Kolby Hancock and Jordan Bell in theirs, with thirds won by Jacob McKee, Justin Byler, Liam Davis and Colton Hill. That’s all that I know.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
