(Fourth & final in a set of individual #NextLevel recaps)
By SHANNON HEATON
Northeast Florida Matmen
The Matmen coverage area, whether Atlantic- or Gulfside, had no representation at either the NCAA Division II national tournament in Birmingham, ALA, or the Division III national tournament in La Crosse, WI — which happens to be Matmen’s first stomping grounds when it comes to high school wrestling, side note.
No representation this year, anyway. But here’s a survey of local wrestlers that competed at regional tournaments at both Division II and Division III levels last month. We will have a final #NextLevel post next week, looking at programs that are led by coaches with area connections, taking a look at South Dakota State in Division I and Newberry College in Division II.
Xaiver Sampsel (Fleming Island ’16): Went 0-2 at the Division II Super Regional – Midwest in Indianapolis, competing for Limestone College at 133. Sampsel lost to Newberry’s Jordan Simpson (eventual 5th place finisher) via an 8-0 major decision in the first round. Sampson had a solid offensive effort in the first round of wrestlebacks against Lake Erie College’s Andrew Lieb, but fell short in a 13-10 loss.
RaSean McArthur (Lincoln ’13): Went 0-2 at the D2 Super Regional – Midwest in Indianapolis, competing for Coker College at 141. McArthur lost by tech fall (19-3 in 3:34) in the first round to eventual regional champion Nick Crume of host school University of Indianapolis. McArthur then lost by fall in the first round of wrestlebacks, in 2:12, to Lake Erie College’s Zach Ruggles.
Robert Parland (University Christian ’13): Went 0-2 at Indianapolis, competing for Coker at 197. Parland took a three-overtime loss in the first round to college in-state rival Cody Brundage of Newberry, falling 5-4. In the first round of wrestlebacks, Parland took a second loss to Indianapolis’ Brody Conner, falling 4-0 in that match.
Brian Girard (Arnold ’16): Went 0-2 at Indianapolis, competing for Belmont Abbey College at 197. Girard lost in the first round to the eventual third-place finisher, Lake Erie College’s Evan Rosborough, via tech fall (17-0 in 4:12). After a first-round bye in the wrestlebacks, Girard then lost to UNC-Pembroke’s Makenna Cook, also via tech fall (19-1 in 2:08) in the second round of wrestlebacks.
Hayden Good (Bartram Trail ’15): Went 0-2 at the Division III East Regional, hosted by Ferrum College at Franklin County HS in Rocky Mount, VA, for Johns Hopkins University at 285. Good took an 11-4 loss in the first round to NYU’s Santino Pelusi, then lost in the first round of wrestlebacks to Southern Virginia’s Alex Brunner, 9-6.
