Northeast Florida Matmen
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — After solid first-day performances on Friday, the hopes of Northeast area juniors Michael DeAugustino (Flagler Palm Coast) and Brandon Dickman (Creekside) came up short on Saturday.
That’s more a testament to the elite level of competition faced than anything else at the NHSCA Junior Nationals this past weekend.
Dickman had three matches on Saturday in the 170-pound weight class.
He advanced past two New York wrestlers to reach the second set of Consi 16 wrestlebacks, with wins over Jacob Sarow of Akron HS, 3-1, on a takedown in sudden victory, and then a 6-4 decision over Timmy Ganuncio of Minisink Valley HS, a match in which Dickman scored all of his points in the final period after trailing twice, 2-0 and 4-2, with a late turn making sure sudden victory wouldn’t be necessary again.
Dickman then faced Kyle Homet of Waynesburg HS in Pennsylvania, who rolled out to an 8-0 lead midway through the third period before Dickman could get on the scoreboard with a late reversal, falling 10-3 in that match.
DeAugustino had to wait through five rounds of wrestlebacks at 120 before getting on the mat on Saturday against Belleville Althoff’s Chase Bittle, a three-time Illinois state finalist and two-time champion. Neither wrestler was able to score during regulation, but Bittle was able to secure a takedown and brief two-count in sudden victory, moving onward with a 5-1 decision.
