Georgia AAU Recap: NFWA

Northeast Florida Matmen staff report

LYONS, GA — The North Florida Wrestling Academy, headed up by Fleming Island’s coaching staff, cleaned up on Saturday at the Georgia AAU Championships.

In the varsity division, Joseph Donato (113), Albie Snedaker (120), Jaquan English (138), Anthony Breeden (170) and Jason Davis (220) all were victorious.

Donato had two decisions, a pin and tech fall in taking the 113 title, a round-robin weight, with his fall over South Georgia Wrestling’s Edward Singletary (Brantley County) proving decisive. Snedaker had three pins at 120, falling the hosts’ Cruz Arredondo in the final.

English was 5-0 in a roundrobin format at 138, majoring the hosts’ Gage Clark, 12-4, in the first round in what was the decisive match of the bracket. At 170, Breeden had a major and decision prior to falling Swainsboro’s Lincoln Gay in the final.

At 220, Davis — the 3A state champion for Fleming Island in March — had a pin and decision, downing Cook Wrestling’s Jeffery Pinkney in the title match.

Briar Jackson took second in the varsity division at both 126 and 132, falling 7-6 at 126 to Coffee’s John Watts and 9-5 to Zachary Jurey at 132, an independent GA wrestler. Luke Chop added a third-place finish at 138.

At the JV level, Donato (113), Dalton Baysinger (126), Tyler Williams (132), Chop (138) and Jeffery Henry (182) all took firsts, while Riley Holton was second at 106. Middle-school NFWA wrestlers Kaden Schaefer (90) and Hunter Herrington (102) also won Georgia titles Saturday.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
