#NextLevel17-18: Fletcher’s Stepanyan to Attend SDSU

The Northeast Florida area has its third Division I signee presently.

Fletcher senior Narek Stepanyan has been accepted to South Dakota State University and, per coach David Harrison, has been invited to wrestle for the Jackrabbits under Bolles alum Chris Bono, starting in the 2017-18.

It’s unknown at this time whether a signing ceremony has been staged at Fletcher. As we have done with other wrestler signings, when a signing photo is made available, we will post that on both Matmen sites.

Stepanyan, who was born in Armenia and moved to Spain in 2011, relocated to the United States a year and a half later. His first year of wrestling came as an Atlantic Coast sophomore in the 2014-15 season, where he reached the Gateway semis and was a District 1 runnerup at 195. In his junior year, also at AC, Stepanyan won a Gateway title and was District 1 runnerup, taking second at Region 1 as well, and finishing one match short of a 3A state medal.

This past season, wrestling for the Senators after two off-seasons with the Beach Rats Wrestling Club, Stepanyan earned his second Gateway title, with a third District 1 runnerup finish. However, he followed that up with a Region 1 championship and finished second at states.

Carrying a 4.0 GPA in high school, Stepanyan will major in finance at SDSU. Stepanyan joins previous Northeast area HS wrestlers Josh Calhoun (Bolles ’15, Edinboro University) and Kaleb Warner (Columbia ’15, Campbell University) at the Division I level, with Josh Fox (University Christian ’12) recently completing his eligibility and graduating from Ohio State University.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
