#NextLevel2017-18: Arnold’s Pickren To Sign With Arizona State

And some news from the Gulfside…Arnold has its second Division I wrestler.

A formal signing has yet to take place, but Marlins senior William Pickren is expected to attend Arizona State University and will be in the Sun Devil wrestling room, wrestling for ASU head coach Zeke Jones, as soon as July, per his father, Chris.

As with other wrestler signings, when a photo is made available down the road, we will post that.

Pickren was a four-year state placewinner, with four District 1 titles and four Region 1 titles, competing for South Walton in his first two seasons before transferring to Arnold to start as a junior.

As a member of the Seahawks, Pickren won District 1 and Region 1 titles in his freshman year, reaching the 1A state finals at 106 (falling to eventual four-time Lake Highland state champ and Florida’s #1 junior, Joey Silva). Pickren repeated as District 1 and Region 1 champion at 120 as a sophomore, taking fifth at states after a semifinal loss to three-time state champion Brevin Balmeceda, now at South Dade.

At Arnold as a junior, Pickren repeated District 1/Region 1 at 120, taking fourth at states after a semifinal loss to eventual two-time state champ Mason Wohltman (an Old Dominion signee) of Lake Highland, and won both districts and regions this year at 132.

Pickren joins fellow Marlin senior Richie McClanahan, who verbally committed in October and signed his letter of intent to attend to Penn State in November, as Division I recruits for the Class of 2017 in the Northwest area. Pickren will be joined by fellow Northwest-area alum Gabe Beyer (Leon ’16) in the Arizona State room when Beyer joins the team in the 2018-19 season, following completion of his mission trip.

I covered wrestling for 15 years up north and "retired" in 2011. But as I thought I had in 1992, I couldn't stay away. Started Northeast Florida Matmen in 2013, Northwest Florida Matmen in 2015. New initiative this year is to create a space on my sites where ALL Florida results can be stored, searched, reviewed and used by my readers, with NO COST TO THEM.
