I just got home from celebrating my son’s birthday and saw this on Facebook. My son happened to throw against Cam Brown at a meet in Jacksonville. That was the last time I saw him, several weeks after he had reached the 195 finals in 1A for Florida High.
I had to admit, I was kind of surprised to see him throwing the shot and competing in other, lesser track events. I said as much to him. I asked him about why he would be running track. He answered simply, “I’m an athlete. What else would I be doing?”
He believes in family, in sports, in team. Even though he had nothing to gain from track, as he had his football offer already in hand. Today, though, he’s in Gainesville, getting ready for the first round of chemotherapy to treat osteosarcoma. Bone cancer.
It can all change in a heartbeat, guys.
Here’s a link to a GoFundMe account set up on behalf of the Brown family: https://www.gofundme.com/teamsupercam-donation-fund
My son and I are both still shocked by this. Cam was all he talked about on the way home from the meet, how far Cam could throw on raw athleticism alone.
A couple of North Florida wrestling family members have already stepped up, I’ve seen. I’m about to in a minute. We’re a wrestling family. What else would we do for one of our own?
