KISSIMMEE — Beach Rats Wrestling Club’s Narek Stepanyan (220) and Josiah McCallum (285) swept to freestyle and Greco-Roman titles in the junior division of last weekend’s FAWA spring state tournament at Osceola High School.
Stepanyan, who’ll graduate from Fletcher later this month and will be wrestling at South Dakota State University with an academic scholarship, won the Greco division with techs over Ft Myers’ Jamey Vasquez (11-0) and Lakeland’s Tanner Howe (15-2) on Saturday, and wasn’t scored upon in freestyle on Sunday, teching Howe (10-0) and Mocco Wrestling’s Cole Schwartzberg (Mater Lakes, also 10-0).
McCallum, a junior at Bishop Kenny, falled Harmony’s Carter Harris in 1:53 and teched Pin N Win’s Travon Mincey to win Greco at 285, coming back to beat Harris twice in freestyle (10-0 and 7-2) for the second title.
Pensacola’s Jacob Cochran, a junior at Tate, and Pin N Win’s Delmontae Davis, a senior at Westside and University of Dubuque Division III signee, each took at least one second in the key events of the weekend.
Cochran was second in both Greco (106/113 weight class combined, losses by fall in 2:16 and tech fall, 12-1) and freestyle (113, loss by 10-0 tech) to Florida Jets’ Ryan Rowland (Hagerty). Davis finished second in Greco at 170, with two tech fall wins and a loss by tech fall to Florida Jets’ Max Wohlabaugh, a Winter Springs senior.
Also at the junior level, Beach Rats’ Jacob Satterfield was third in freestyle and fourth in Greco at 138, while Mincey took third in Greco at 285. James Knox of Beach Rats was fourth in freestyle at 132, while John Jones of Pin N Win (Westside) took fifth at 160. In the Cadet division, Pin N Win’s Angelo Philpot (Westside) took sixth at 138 in Greco, while schoolboy Andrew McGowan of Panthers Wrestling Club had fourths in both Greco and freestyle.
Cochran and Davis both won titles in the third style contested on Saturday, as the folkstyle competitors were not wrestling to move on to the Southeast Regional event in Atlanta coming up over Memorial Day weekend.
Cochran had two pins over Mocco Wrestling’s Alanna Desouza (52 seconds & 1:16) at 106, while Davis had a fall in 1:49 and a 10-2 major at 170 over Cocoa Beach’s Ryan Pletcher.
Mincey was second at 285 in juniors, while Jones (junior 160) and Cacique Wrestling Club’s Mario Powers (cadet 182) took thirds. Pin N Win’s Braxton Henry (Westside, cadet 126) and Philpot (cadet 138) each were sixth.
At the younger levels, McGowan was third in folkstyle at schoolboy 120, while Beach Rats’ Noah Taylor, competing in the novice division at 100, finished second.
