TRAVELERS REST, SC — After two weekends of heavy dual activity, Yulee made its final tuneup for Tuesday’s 1A-District 3 dual team tournament by doing something completely different.
The Hornets took part in the 17-team Devil Dog tournament, which had roundrobin and IBT components located within it, finishing in the middle of the pack, taking ninth place with 113 points.
Four Yulee wrestlers placed in the championship side of their weight classes, as Tristan Martinez (113), Orion Duffy (132), Bradley Durrance (220) and Grayson Pope (285) all took fourths.
On the consi side, Bryce Bees (126) was sixth, while Michael Crawford (195) took seventh. Aston Ricks (138) and Kevin Beverly (182) both finished eighth in their weight classes.
In the first round of pool competition, the Hornets were 5-5, with byes going to Bees (126), Duffy (132) and Durrance (220). Yulee got falls from Martinez (113, 1:39 over TC Roberson’s Tommy Haney), Ricks (132, 5:32 over BHP’s Will Tollison), Beverly (182, :31 over Union’s Payton Gregory), Crawford (195, 1:26 over Travelers’ Rest Nic Gillenwater) and Pope (285, 1:45 over Union’s Weston Foster).
Yulee had a better round in round 2, going 6-2 as a team. Byes went to Martinez, Andrew Killmeyer (120), Ricks and Jesse Johnson (145). Winning by fall were: Duffy (132, 1:06 over Pisgah’s Jorge Almeraz); Beverly (182, :59 over Wade Hampton’s Jacob Busche); Crawford (195, 1:01 over Ft Dorechester’s Otis Mack); Durrance (220, :20 over TC Roberson’s Patrick Bartlett); and Pope (285, 1:19 over Ft Dorechester’s Jayden Gomez).
In round 3, the Hornets struggled the most out of any of the rounds thus far, going 5-7 as a group, with just one bye going to Aaron Gray at 106. Martinez (:48 over Wade Hampton’s Forest Baker), Duffy (4:22 over Union’s Omar Glenn), Beverly (2:57 over Westside’s Gabe Liddell) and Durrance (2:12 over Pope’s TJ Mordarski) all won by pin, with Killmeyer winning by forfeit over North Henderson.
The rubber started meeting the road for the Hornets in round 4, the bracket semifinals, as only Bees survived with a victory, downing Dawson County’s Kevin Arias, 12-7.
Two Yulee wrestlers took decision losses: Martinez (8-7 to Broome’s Braden Lopez) and Crawford (7-3 to Pope’s Chris Sheanan). Duffy, Ricks, Beverly, Durrance and Pope all lost in round 4 by fall.
Round 5 didn’t go very much better, as Yulee again had just one victory. The Hornets’ lone win came from Crawford, who won by fall in 1:09 over Westside’s Eli Johnson; Ricks lost by technical fall, and the other six wrestlers (Martinez, Bees, Duffy, Durrance and Pope) taking losses by pin, while Beverly forfeited in the round.
